Fibers

Most of Mitzi’s work in fibers revolves around papermaking and weaving. Paper is a universal surface for the creation and distribution of ideas. By creating the paper herself, Mitzi is able to form a physical and emotional connection to her artwork at the source. The aesthetic beauty of handmade paper is evident, but by diving deeper into the creation process, an artist can imbue the fibers with their thoughts and memories. Mitzi’s bond with the material transforms paper from a surface for printing into a language of its own, communicating love, pain, and loss.

Weaving comes in many varieties: twining, loom weaving, and paper weaving. For Mitzi, the joy of weaving comes not from the material being woven, but the process. She uses the act of weaving as a form of meditation. She finds purpose in bringing together individual, broken parts to create a cohesive form.
