About the Artist

Mariam El Awad, also known as Mitzi, is an interdisciplinary artist. She is currently receiving her BFA in Printmaking at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, MA. Mitzi was born in Saida, Lebanon to a Palestinian-Lebanese family in 2002. She spent her early childhood in South Lebanon with her mother and extended family. In 2009, she and her mother immigrated to the US to join her father in the suburbs outside of Boston. She has since called Massachusetts home but her longing for her ancestral land never ceased. From a young age, Mitzi found refuge in creating art to channel her complex feelings regarding her childhood and upbringing. Having suffered the effects of war trauma, both firsthand and generationally, she uses her poetic abstract and conceptual art to explore themes of memory, time, grief, and love. Today, Mitzi creates powerful work to advocate for Palestinian rights and a sovereign Palestinian nation.
